Why is car insurance for new drivers over 25 so expensive?
You may have looked for quotes for new drivers and been shocked to discover how much insurance costs, even when you’re over 25. This is due to a number of factors:
Inexperience. Firstly, any inexperienced driver, regardless of their age, stands a much higher risk of having a serious accident in their first couple of years of driving. This is because there are several situations for which your lessons and test can’t prepare you – for example, extreme weather, motorway driving, and driving in unfamiliar places. All these situations present big challenges for drivers – and an insurance company likes to know you’ve overcome such challenges before they’ll start offering you cheaper premiums.
Age. Even though you’re out of the very highest risk bracket, insurers still consider you a significantly greater risk than someone in their forties, for example. There are several different reasons for this, some of which may even be biological. Young people tend to be more reckless, which some experts put down to the brain’s frontal lobe not being fully developed until an adult is in his or her mid-twenties. This means you’re considered a relative hazard even over 25.
Lack of insurance history. Up to now, what we’ve talked about are general trends. Of course, a driver’s safety rating is also dependent on his or her personal skill and attitude. Unfortunately, though, until, you can prove to insurance companies that you’re a low-risk driver, you’ll be treated as a general statistic – and this means expensive insurance. After a few years of not claiming, you’ll be able to prove to your insurer that you’re a low risk, and they’ll offer you lower premiums.
