What types of car insurance are available for 17 year olds?
The first thing to understand is that car insurance is a compulsory purchase. If you want to drive a car, whether on a provisional or full license, you need to have an insurance policy in place.
Third party car insurance for 17 year olds
The absolute minimum requirement to be driving is third party cover. This is likely to be the cheapest car insurance for 17 year olds. But, it has significant limitations and drawbacks. It only pays out if you injure or damage another person and/or their property. Any damage to your car, property or injury to yourself will not be covered.
Third party fire and theft cover – as the name suggests – has the additional benefit of paying out were your car to be stolen or damaged in a fire.
Fully comprehensive car insurance for 17 year olds
This is the most popular cover type and offers you the most protection. It means that in the event of a claim, you can rest assured you will be covered against a full range of risks.
Talk to MyFirstUK about your insurance needs. While third party cover can be cheaper, unless your car is only worth a few hundred pounds, you would almost certainly be better to go with a fully comprehensive policy. And because we’ll do the shopping around for you, it may be that a comprehensive policy can be made available for only a few pounds more than a basic third party cover.
